Self-care from Cell to Soul!

A Shift in Care

When was the last time that you were able to have an open conversation with your doctor about the wholeness of your health? Perhaps you only discuss one or two specific ailments instead of your health in its entirety. The more we focus on one specific health issue, the less we are able to see the entirety of what is going on with our health and the wholeness of who we are as a person, rather than a list of symptoms. Symptoms are chaos in the body trying to communicate from the subconscious to a conscious level to help you get back to divine order.

It is vital to our well being that we start having open conversations with our doctors, rather than being told what to do. This means that we need to be looking at how all of our systems function together, not just the symptoms of one isolated issue. You have a due diligence to take care of yourself, which means taking the fear out of “sick care” so that the focus is on health care. In order to achieve this, you have to make the healthcare system work for you by cocreating with your healthcare providers. What is standing in your way?

Some feel that they don’t have the proper tools to address their health concerns with their healthcare providers. The topics below, address many common, widespread health issues that are scarcely addressed, but how do these pertain to your personal health?

A glimpse into America's Current State of Health....

The facts highlighted below are not shared with the intent to scare readers. The intention of sharing these statistics is to illuminate areas in which many, both personally and collectively, are not aware. By becoming aware of these issues, we can stop perpetuating these harmful patterns. Hopefully, these facts will also illuminate why there is a genuine need for Conscious Living, as the mindbody connection helps to heal the harmful patterns outlined below.

Healthcare in the U.S. Regarding...

Cardiovascular Health

According to the CDC
, "heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1in every 4 deaths”.

"Our current thinking about how to treat and prevent heart disease is at best misguided, and at worst harmful," Dr. Hyman wrote last month."We believe we are treating the causes of heart disease by lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar with medication. But the real question is what causes high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar in the first place. It is certainly not a medication deficiency!"

Fertility

“About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 1544 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”

“Studies confirm addressing lifestyle factors – including nutrition, weight, exercise, psychological stress, as well as environmental and occupational exposure –could have substantial effects on fertility.” - Dr. Mark Hyman

Mental Health

“An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older or about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. When applied to the 2004 U.S. Census residential population estimate for ages 18 and older, this figure translates to 57.7 million people.” - The Kim Foundation

“We have 1.1 billion people in the world with mood problems or cognitive disorders,” explains Dr. Hyman. “One in 10 Americans is on antidepressants, one in 10 children are on stimulant medication, and one in four people will be affected by major depression during their lifetime. Today, we have a chance to fundamentally address the causes. This has never really been possible before, because we never understood how biology works and how it all fits together.”

Emotional Suppression or Disconnection

We live in a society that is driven by the mind and has left little room for emotional awareness and expression. Furthermore, our society criticizes feelings and encourages disconnection and suppression of them.

According to Dr. Candace Pert, author of Molecules of Emotion, ‘The molecules of emotion, a kind of neuropeptide, change the chemistry and electricity of every cell in the body and mind. Feelings literally alter the electrical frequencies generated by our bodies producing a nonverbal communication.’

A feeling typically lasts no more than ninety seconds, and is a movement of consciousness through the body, but once we attach an old story or meaning to the feeling it becomes an emotion, with an actual electric charge. This means we can keep living old traumas and stories out as long as we relive and attach the old story to the current emotion. Why is this important to your wellbeing? Emotional suppression and repression is connected to every form of degenerative disease and the link between unresolved trauma and cancer has been studied in depth by Dr. Ryke Geerd Hammer.

Spiritual Disconnection

From the perspective of consciousness as the ground of all being, obtained wellbeing is obtained through integration and connection of all layers of our being. Therefore, the closer to your inner being, or Spirit, the greater your vibration and the more vital energy will be coursing through you.

Happiness/Stress

“Onethird of Americans are living with extreme stress and nearly half of Americans (48 percent) believe that their stress has increased over the past five years. Stress is taking a toll on people — contributing to health problems, poor relationships and lost productivity at work, according to a new national survey released today by the American Psychological Association (APA).”

“95 percent of all illness is caused or worsened by stress.”  “Among its havoc, one metaanalysis involving 300 studies found chronic stress could damage your immunity.” - Dr. Mark Hyman

Connections to Consider...

Gut/Brain Connection

The vagus nerve consists of two cranial nerves that run from the brainstem to the gut and interweave with additional organs along the way; such as the heart. These nerves work with the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation response) to control, primarily, heart and digestive function. Particularly in digestion, the vagus nerve regulates chemical levels to absorb and assimilate nutrients from food. Also, it is important to mention that many of our brain messenger chemicals (neurotransmitters) are produced in the gut and the vagus nerve is a pathway they travel to the brain, via the ileocecal valve. Because of this gut/brain connection, it is imperative that we have a strong digestion so that our brains are also strong and impermeable to stress & chemical toxins. Some ways to strengthen this connection include supplementation, diet that supports this connection rather than weakening it, yoga, meditation, and other techniques to promote proper relaxation.

Toxicity Levels

There are many sources of concern regarding individual toxicity levels, in America. They can include personal hygiene products, cleaning products, environmental toxins, fluoridation of water systems, traces of harmful chemicals in food, etc. With all of these sources of toxins in America, it is vital to be aware of what is in the most common toxic products that you use. It is also vital to regularly detox in order to keep your toxicity levels low.

The Environmental Working Group has found through their research that many chemicals in American cleaning products have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive issues, allergies, and other toxic issues.

According to Dr. Mercola, “Most personal care productson the market contain toxic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and triclosan – chemicals linked to hormonal imbalance, toxicities, reproductive health problems, and even cancer.”

“Environmental factors are now generally believed to be involved in the causation of nearly all cancers. Further, the World Health Organization has estimated that environmental factors constitute 2533% of global disease burden.” - Klinghardt Academy

Inability to Detox

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, “Methylation is a key biochemical process that is essential for the proper function of almost all of your body’s systems” Methylation issues can cause you to develop an inability to detox properly. Some simple solutions for avoiding methylation issues and optimizing detoxification include incorporating lots of B vitamins into the diet, incorporate more folic acid into the diet with dark, leafy greens, eliminate processed foods high in sugar, etc.

Imbalances that may lead to dis-ease...
Inflammation

While inflammation is the immune system’s normal response to trauma or infection in the body, chronic inflammation is the hidden, yet common, root cause to a wide variety of diseases. Inflammation is not exclusive to the immune system. It can prohibit virtually every organ from optimal function which causes it to be the hidden culprit of many chronic diseases; including, obesity, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders, etc.

Dr. Mark Hyman outlines the common causes of chronic inflammation, which are individually unique, but can include an inflammatory diet consisting of high sugar and processed, refined foods, stress, lack of exercise, hidden food allergies, environmental toxins, etc. Since the causes of chronic inflammation are individually unique, and it can contribute to a wide variety of disease, the solution must be an individualized plan with an integrative approach.

Some of the most common solutions for treating chronic inflammation include an elimination diet that consists of eliminating inflammatory foods and replacing them with antiinflammatory foods, testing for food allergies to also eliminate them from the diet, supplementation like probiotics and minerals, engaging in relaxing activities such as yoga, etc.

Pathogens (like fungus, yeast & parasites)

Overgrowth of yeast, fungus and parasites, in the body, are common but often unrecognized. These ailments can be triggered by the overuse of antibiotics, hormone drugs, stress, and an unhealthy diet. They can harm the gastrointestinal, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems; as well as cause a wide variety of other symptoms. Luckily, overcoming yeast and fungus parasites in the body can be as simple as reducing stress, enjoying foods that “starve” yeast in the gut, replenishing health in the gut with the use of probiotics and other antifungal nutrients, and removing other potentially harmful factors from the diet and environment.

Fatty Liver

Fatty liver is another hidden, common imbalance among Americans. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, “The high fructose corn syrup found in our processed foods is the single biggest cause of fatty liver”. Fatty liver is exactly what it sounds like, a liver full of fat that causes inflammation throughout the body. It has been linked to diabetes, heart attack, and a wide variety of other chronic illness. The simple solution for fatty liver is elimination of high fructose corn syrup and processed starch from the diet, and incorporation of antiinflammatory and liver detoxifying foods. Also, liver healing supplementation and exercise are very beneficial for healing fatty liver.

Leaky Gut

When the gut is ‘leaky’, the unabsorbed food enters our bloodstream and attacks our cells. Unabsorbed food can also be converted into neurotoxins that gain access to our brain, affecting the balance of neurotransmitters and overall function. Because of a lack of nutrientrich food, less time to enjoy our meals, and distractions while eating, many of us have developed an absorption issue. Healing a leaky gut is simple with the incorporation of fermented and probiotic foods. Replace nutrient depleting foods with mind nourishing whole foods like nuts, seeds, greens and a plethora of colors of fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind that your diet should be personalized to your specific mineral, nutrient and neurotransmitter imbalances.

How the Above Issues Affect Mental Health

The above issues are common, yet largely unrecognized, contributors to impaired mental health. Due to the brain/gut connection, all of these ailments are interconnected and should be treated as such. The parasympathetic nervous system is the response center for relaxation and repair, which is needed in all healing processes of the body and mind. However, frequent stimulation and an onslaught of toxic chemicals may cause the vagus nerve to become majorly malfunctioning. It either reacts by over or under producing; both resulting in detrimental health effects. I offer individualized support to help you find exactly what brain & gut boosting foods, supplementation, and nourishing thoughts are best for you.
